Chapter Sixteen

Andrew

I HEARD MY PHONE BEEP and looked down. “Finally.”

I grabbed my jacket and headed downstairs. McKenna was waiting for me in my car, parked alongside the curb in front of the building. She hopped out when she saw me.

“Hi.” She greeted me with an exuberant kiss.

“Hi.”

I got into the driver’s side while she got into the passenger seat. “I take it things went well?” I asked as I made my way home.

“They did. Thank you again for inspiring me. You pushed me to do something. I would have sat and wallowed for heaven knows how long.”

“I’m glad I could be a small part of healing the rift. I’m sorry it went on for so long.”

“Me too. It was stupid. I look forward to the moment we can look back on this and laugh.”

I got back to my place, feeling a little down. I was dreading sleeping alone. I dreaded waking up alone. I was going to miss her.

We headed upstairs. I hoped it wasn’t the last time. “I’ll grab my suitcase,” she said with far more excitement than I cared to hear.

I couldn’t blame her. She was excited to be going home. “Who is going to make my coffee in the morning?” I teased.

“I guess that little machine on the kitchen counter will have to be enough.”

“But what about dinner? I’m going to be forced to do takeout again.”

“You could cook for yourself,” she replied with a laugh. “Do you mean to tell me I have stolen away your independence?”

“I’m not sure I ever really had it.”

“Sure, you did.”

I walked into the bathroom and collected her things, carrying them into the bedroom where she was packing her clothes. I handed them to her. “And now I have to shower alone?”

“You are not making this easy,” she said with a laugh.

“I don’t want it to be easy. I think I kind of liked you being here.”

“Kind of? You only kind of liked it?”

“You know I liked being here with you.” I stepped to her, pulling her into my arms. I didn’t care if it made me vulnerable. “I’m going to miss you,” I whispered.

“I’m going to see you every day at work.”

“That’s not the same.”

“Can we talk about this another time?” she asked.

“Do you think there is something to talk about?” I asked.

She smiled, nodding again. “I do.”

That was a minor relief. “Then I will leave you alone.”

“Don’t leave me alone. That’s the last thing I want. I want to fix this situation with Chloe and Eddie. I’ve been happy here with you, but it has always felt a little off, like I wasn’t totally complete.”

“I get it.” I didn’t, but I wanted her to have this moment. “Can I drive you home?”

“Are you sure you want to?”

“I do. You can take the Lexus if you want, but I’ll admit, I’m stalling. I don’t want to be here alone. I’m dragging out my last few minutes with you.”

“These are not our last minutes. We have plenty more time together.”

“Do we?”

“Yes. And I would love for you to drive me home.
